Rommel (pseudonym) works in one of the country's top advertising agencies. He was introduced to cocaine through intimacy with a client in the office. At first he only took cocaine at weekend parties. At one stage he became intoxicated. Finally, after three months of treatment at a drug addiction treatment center, he was freed from the grip of addiction. But even if Rommel was able to come out of this dark world, many young people are exhausting themselves with cocaine addiction.
Cocaine, a once-obsolete drug, is slowly gaining popularity among the rising youth. As a result, its use is increasing at an alarming rate. From 2014 to 2023, about 41 kg of cocaine was seized in the country. Intelligence officials including the Narcotics Control Directorate claim that Bangladesh is used as a route for smuggling cocaine to different countries, but no cocaine market has developed in the country in that sense. However, young people like Rommel say that cocaine, like many other drugs, is now one of the most common drugs in the country. This drug is often available. However, due to the high price, its access is somewhat limited to the elite areas.
Talking to various law enforcement officers also revealed similar information. They say that because the price of cocaine was so high, the demand for it was very low. But recently the use of this terrible drug is increasing in the country.
Rommel said, they used to buy cocaine at the rate of three and a half thousand taka per quarter village (fourth of a village). Sometimes he used to collect from Gulshan, sometimes Baridhara, sometimes new market area. Whatever the place, the trade was carried on in great secrecy. Used unconventional messaging apps like Telegram or Discord to communicate with suppliers.
The Rommels used a group of 8 to 9 people to consume cocaine together. All of them are children of wealthy families, residents of the elite areas of Dhaka. They rented a suite in a five-star hotel in the capital's Gulshan and used to consume cocaine throughout the night. Rommel was also acquainted with one or two more cocaine-loving groups. Almost all the members of these parties are youths and children of established politicians and businessmen in the society. Some are current or former students of private universities.
Similarly, a former student of Jahangirnagar University came in contact with cocaine. At first he was addicted to ganja and yaba, but at one point he got involved in the cocaine cycle. Along with business, he started consuming in the university campus. Various people from Savar, Ashulia area used to come and give these cocaine to him. But they did not know from where they used to bring these cocaine. He collected some cocaine for consumption and the rest for sale. Once the student was in extreme physical condition, recovered through rehab and went out of the country.
Interviews with several other drug addicts and law enforcement officials revealed that cocaine has entered the 'mainstream' drug market over the past decade. As the price is high, its customer base is somewhat limited. But its size is also increasing day by day. That is why now the 'dealing points' of cocaine are scattered in almost all areas of the capital. However, although the exact amount is not known, related parties said that billions of rupees are being traded in the case of cocaine sales.
Law enforcement forces have often recovered varying amounts of cocaine from different areas of the capital. On July 17 last year, the Directorate of Narcotics Control (DNC) seized 10 grams of cocaine from a house in Shyamoli area. A woman named Sobhana Rahman was arrested in this incident. During interrogation, the woman said that she used to bring cocaine from Barcelona, Spain through one of her girlfriends. Then he sold these cocaine in the elite areas of the capital. Apart from this, on September 4, 2022, this force recovered 30 grams of cocaine and various drugs from a multi-storied building in Banani. A person named Salim Sattar was arrested in that incident. Salim Sattar is a citizen of Switzerland and Bangladesh. He owns a lot of wealth.
