They say that the number of patients suffering from fever, cold, heatstroke, diarrhea and typhoid is increasing in hospitals across the country including Dhaka due to intense heat, consumption of unhealthy food and water. There is fear that more patients will increase if the temperature increases.
300 diarrhea patients are treated daily in ICDDR, Bir Hospital. But currently that number has gone to about 500 people. Among them, 60 percent are children and the remaining 40 percent are adult patients, said the doctors there.
An average of 700 to 900 patients are receiving treatment in the children's hospital. Similarly, the pressure of patients has also increased in private chambers of various hospitals and doctors including Suhrawardy Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dr. ICDDR, head of the hospital of B. Baharul Alam told The Business Standard, "When more than 700 patients a day are admitted in ICDDR, B, the situation is considered to have deteriorated. At the beginning of summer, that situation has not yet developed. But the patients are increasing."
"To avoid diarrhea in summer, general hygiene should be followed. Drink clean water, wash hands well with soap before eating. Especially those who feed and take care of children, should be very careful about this," added Dr. Baharul Alam
According to the ICDDR, B, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, workers such as rickshaw pullers, farmers and construction workers, those who are overweight and physically ill – especially those with heart disease and high blood pressure – are at risk of heat stroke. Rajshahi Medical College Hospital's chief professor Dr. Sahida Yasmin said, "This summer, more patients with diarrhea are being admitted. Besides, the admission rate of children suffering from fever, cold, cough and pneumonia is also increasing. There are now about 500 children admitted in the four wards of the hospital."
With increasing heat, the incidence of diarrhea has increased in Narayanganj. In the 100-bed Narayanganj Victoria General Hospital of the city, since Eid, an average of 50 patients are receiving services daily with various symptoms of diarrhea.
Shiuli Akhter, in-charge of the hospital's diarrhea ward, said, "Now an average of 50 patients are coming daily. The pressure of patients has increased after Eid. Due to the heat, the number of diarrhea patients has increased. We are providing enough saline and medicine to the patients."
Naogaon General Hospital with 250 beds has 15 beds but 56 people are admitted there. Among them, 26 people have diarrhea. Additional beds have been arranged for additional patients from the hospital.
In the last 24 hours, 70 patients were admitted to the hospital, most of them suffering from diarrhea and pneumonia.
Doctor's advice to stay healthy in summer
Emeritus Professor and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's personal doctor Dr. ABM Abdullah told TBS that the current temperature in the country has exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. This temperature is dangerous for everyone from children to the elderly.

"It is good to consume oral saline. Besides, salt can be mixed with water. But lemon water, sugarcane syrup sold on the street should not be consumed. Unhealthy, stale food should not be consumed. Children and the elderly should be kept indoors as much as possible," he added.
