The world's oldest person, Juan Vicente Perez Mora, has breathed his last. 114-year-old Mora died last Tuesday, Mora's family members said.
Many people shared the news of the death of South American citizen Mora on social media; Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is among them. In a message posted on his X account on Tuesday, Maduro said, "114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez Mora left us today and traveled to eternity."
The British organization Guinness Book of World Records officially recognized Juan as the oldest person in the world on February 4, 2022. He was 112 years and 253 days old at that time.
Juan, known as 'Tio' to his family and friends, was born on May 27, 1909 in El Cobre, Tachira Province, Venezuela. Tachira is not far from the Andes Mountains of South America. Juan was the ninth of his parents' 10 children.
Later he became the father of 11 children in his married life. Juan was preceded in death by 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Born into a farming family, Juan joined his father and brothers in their sugarcane and coffee fields at the age of 5, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He later became sheriff (chief law officer) of the town of El Kobre, but did not give up farming. As long as he was able, Juan did regular farming.
