India became the first country in the world to receive 111 billion dollars in remittances

India received $111 billion in remittances in 2022. According to the United Nations Migration Agency, India is the first country in the world to receive remittances of 100 billion and 111 billion dollars. India's position is first in the world in terms of receiving remittances.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in its World Migration Report released on Tuesday that the top five countries receiving remittances in 2022 were India, Mexico, China, the Philippines and France.

According to the report, India is far ahead of the rest by receiving remittances of $111.22 billion. The country became the first country to achieve the milestone of 100 billion and 111 billion dollars.

In 2022, Mexico is on the second position in this list with remittances of 61.10 billion dollars. The country was in the second position in 2021 as well. China has long held the second position in receiving remittances. But in 2021, Mexico came second after pushing China back.

According to the report, India was the first recipient of remittances, receiving $53.48 billion, $68.91 billion and $83.15 billion in 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively. In 2022, the country touched the first milestone of $100 billion in remittances.

According to the report, a large number of expatriate workers from South Asia go to work in different countries of the world. Thanks to them, the region receives a significant share of global remittances.

Three South Asian countries—India, Pakistan and Bangladesh—are among the top ten remittance recipients.

Pakistan and Bangladesh are ranked 6th and 8th respectively in receiving remittances in 2022. This year, Pakistan received about 30 billion dollars and Bangladesh received 21.5 billion dollars in remittances.

In 2022, China ranked third at $51 billion in remittances, the Philippines at fourth at $38.05 billion, and France at fifth at $30.04 billion.

In addition, in 2022, Pakistan in the sixth position in remittance flow is 29.87 billion dollars, Egypt in the seventh position is 28.33 billion dollars, Bangladesh in the eighth position is 21.5 billion dollars, Nigeria in the ninth position is 20.13 billion dollars and Germany in the tenth position is 19. 29 billion dollars received in remittances.

Bangladesh ranks sixth in the world in terms of sending migrants even though it ranks eighth in receiving remittances. The top five sending countries are India, Mexico, Russia, China and Syria.

According to the IOM report, although remittances are the lifeline of many people in South Asia, including Bangladesh, migrant workers from these countries work at high risk, suffer financial exploitation, and sink into additional financial debt due to migration costs. Apart from being harassed at work, they also suffer from 'xenophobia' (hatred of foreigners).

The IOM report revealed that the Gulf countries are major destinations for migrant workers. Immigrants constitute a large part of the total population of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Most of the migrants—largely from Bangladesh, India, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Kenya—work in the construction, hospitality, security, domestic, and retail sectors.
