What the United States said about Aziz and Benazir

Questions have been raised in the US State Department about former Army Chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who were discussed in corruption allegations.

Spokesperson Matthew Miller answered questions about them at the regular briefing of the US State Department today, Wednesday (May 29).

In the press conference, a journalist said that the massive corruption of the former police chief of Bangladesh, who is under the sanctions of the United States, has been revealed. Has any US agency found Benazir's assets and seized any assets? Do you have any information about former army chief General Aziz? Because the United States has recently imposed a visa ban against him. Will the US take any action against the top echelons of the Bangladeshi ruling class—who are doing everything freely?

In response, Matthew Miller said, 'I am aware of the allegations and media reports you have referred to. As we have made clear, corruption reduces economic growth, hinders development, destabilizes governments and undermines democracy. From the beginning, the fight against corruption has become a "core national security interest" of the United States.

But Miller said there was "nothing new to say" about the question, adding, "We never say anything in advance about sanctions or other measures."

A journalist said, a joint investigation by German-based Deutsche Welle and Sweden-based Netra News revealed that former and current members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are regularly deployed as UN peacekeepers. US sanctions may result in gross violations of human rights. How concerned the US is about RAB officers being deployed to UN missions. While the United States provides significant funding, about 27 percent of funding comes from US taxpayer money?

In response, Miller said, 'We are aware of these reports. Peacekeeping operations play an important role in promoting international peace and security. Protecting the human rights of peacekeepers is essential. According to UN policy, the UN relies on countries not sending troops or police involved in human rights abuses or violations of international humanitarian law.
