Belgium University severed ties with Israel over Palestine issue

Belgium's Ghent University has severed ties with all Israeli universities and research institutes. The decision was made by the Belgian institution of higher learning due to the involvement of universities and research institutions with Jerusalem's human rights policy. This decision was announced by the university on Friday.

Violent protests have been going on at Ghent University since last May to protest Israel's attacks on Palestine. Angry students have been protesting and demonstrating in some parts of the university campus. From there, there is a demand to take action against Israel.

In Europe the university is known as Ugent. An investigative committee of the university found links between Israeli educational institutions and the Israeli government, military or security services. The university has also expressed concern in this regard in a statement. Referring to a ruling by the International Criminal Court (ICC), the humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened in recent months. The university has taken it into consideration.

Eugent cut ties with 3 Israeli companies two weeks ago. The university has partnerships with 18 Israeli academic institutions.

The university said it will continue research projects with 6 non-academic Israeli institutions. Because they did not find any link of human rights violations with those institutions.

Earlier last week, two other universities in Belgium announced changes in their cooperation policy with Israeli institutions. Meanwhile, the University of Antwerp said that it will continue ongoing research projects with Israeli institutions. But new projects will be suspended.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the American media CBS, Harvard University has announced that 13 students will not receive degree certificates for participating in pro-Palestinian protests. "By participating in the agitation on campus, they have violated university policy," the statement said, referring to a university provision related to degree eligibility. So we cannot award them degrees at the moment.'

Harvard's decision was immediately protested by many graduate students. Student Shruti Kumar got the opportunity to speak in this event. At one stage of the speech, he mentioned the 13 students and said, 'I am deeply disappointed by the intolerance towards freedom of speech and legal rights on campus. Students are talking about it, teachers are talking about it. Harvard, are you listening to us?' While the ceremony was going on, some graduate students boycotted the ceremony and marched in the streets to protest the non-accreditation of 13 students.
