In Dhaka, 65 trained students have commenced assisting traffic police in managing congestion at key locations throughout the city. Their shifts are from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Launched on November 4, this initiative is part of a broader plan by Labour, Employment, and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, who aims to eventually deploy up to 700 students. An estimated 300 to 400 more students are expected to join in stages, with 600 students projected to serve as auxiliary traffic controllers under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Each student receives Tk 500 for their shift.
This initiative was introduced in the wake of significant political events, including the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, which resulted in attacks on police stations and a temporary withdrawal of law enforcement from the streets. During this period, students took over traffic management duties and have continued to support efforts to address the city's persistent congestion issues, which limited public transport options and increased private vehicles.
