The Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA) has unveiled a strategic roadmap aimed at boosting the nation's semiconductor exports to $1 billion by 2030. This initiative prioritizes the training of 10,000 engineers in semiconductor design, strengthening government support, and advancing local research and development (R&D). Bangladesh's semiconductor design exports hover around $10 million annually, yet the BSIA remains optimistic about reaching its ambitious goal.
The roadmap was discussed during a meeting in Silicon Valley attended by 70 non-resident Bangladeshi semiconductor experts. They highlighted the rapid expansion of the global semiconductor market, which is projected to surpass $1 trillion by the end of the decade. While Bangladesh's semiconductor industry took root in the 2000s, significant progress has been noted since 2017, with companies such as Ulkasemi and Neural Semiconductor playing pivotal roles in driving exports.
Despite facing challenges, semiconductor exports increased to $8 million in 2023, with nearly 700 engineers participating in the sector. VLSI technology, crucial for chip design, is currently being taught at several Bangladeshi universities. However, industry leaders emphasize the critical need for enhanced government support, including cash incentives akin to those provided in Malaysia and India during their semiconductor industry development phases.
