Bangladesh Shipping Corporation repays Tk 475cr loan installment to govt

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) has repaid Tk 475.25 crore to the government as an installment for a loan it secured in 2016. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus praised BSC for its profitability and exemplary performance among state-owned enterprises, stating, "They are examples for state-owned companies."

The loan, jointly provided by the government and China Exim Bank, was utilized by BSC to purchase six ships, including three bulk carriers, at a cost of over Tk 1,457 crore. The acquisition marked a significant milestone for the organization, adding commercial vessels to its fleet for the first time in 27 years during 2018-2019.

Currently, five of the six ships operate under the Bangladesh flag, transporting goods across various international waters. BSC is obligated to repay Tk 2,425 crore, including the principal and interest, in installments over a 13-year period. The cheque was handed over during an event attended by the Chief Adviser, Shipping Ministry Adviser M. Sakhawat Hussain, Shipping Secretary Mohammad Yousuf, and BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek.
