In August, it was reported that the outstanding gas bills owed by government and private organisations in Bangladesh have reached 30,000 crore taka. Among this, power plants owe over 19,000 crore taka, while government fertiliser factories owe 2,300 crore taka. This information was shared by Petrobangla, the Bangladesh Oil, Gas, and Mineral Corporation, during a meeting with energy sector reporters.
Jitendra Nath Sarkar, the chairman of Petrobangla, highlighted that despite the industrial sector facing higher gas prices, the collection rate in this sector is also higher. The management of expenses relies on residential, industrial, and commercial bill payments. Petrobangla is working with the Ministry of Energy to conduct inter-ministerial meetings to recover dues from government entities. Currently, there are 354 pending applications for new industrial gas connections, and decisions on these will be made soon. However, the government has not yet decided to resume new residential gas connections.
