Masoud Pezheshikian has been elected as the new president of Iran. He won this victory by defeating rival candidate Saeed Jalili. Aljazeera news

Iran's state-owned media confirmed this information in a report citing the country's election commission.

President Ibrahim Raisi was killed in a plane crash in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province on May 20. After his death, the country's ruling hardline Islamist government announced the date of the next presidential election. Due to the low rate of voter turnout, the election is conducted in a second round of voting or a run-off.

Although there were 6 candidates in the election, the fight was mainly between Saeed Jalili and Masoud Pezeshkian. In Iran's domestic politics, Jalili is known as a hardliner and Masoud as a reformist politician. However, both are close to the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to the results announced by the Election Commission, Masud Pezheshkian got 1 crore 63 lakh votes and Saeed Jalili got 1 crore 35 lakh votes.

Incidentally, the power of the president of Iran is not the same as the presidential government of other countries. The highest religious leader is at the top of the country's power. The president is essentially his chief aide.
