Officials of the Finance Department said they have now started preparing formal proposals to seek appropriate budgetary support from the two global lenders to pay outstanding fuel and electricity import bills.

Japan is preparing a wish list to receive about $2.7 billion in budget support from the International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Besides, Bangladesh is also seeking loans from other lenders including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

Officials in the Finance Department said World Bank Vice President for South Asia Region Raiser is scheduled to visit Dhaka in the first week of September to discuss the verbally agreed $1 billion aid.

An official of the ministry said on condition of anonymity, "Foreign companies are showing great interest in giving loans to the interim government's proposal. So they are also very optimistic."

He also said, "In addition to payment of government import arrears of various sectors, foreign exchange reserves are expected to be taken to a satisfactory level by this assistance."
