Tk 152 crore case: Commissioner Wahida banned from traveling abroad

The court has barred former commissioner of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Wahida Rahman from traveling abroad in the case of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on account of Tk 152 crore interest deduction.


Judge Mohammad Assamach Jaglul Hossain of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court gave the order on Thursday (June 13) in view of the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) application to ban travel abroad.


ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain attended Jahangi's hearing. The commissioner has been banned from traveling abroad for 60 days under the direction of the court.

Earlier, ACC filed a case against Customs Commissioner Wahida Rahman Chowdhury on June 11 for causing financial loss to the government by waiving unpaid interest of Tk 152 crore 89 thousand 390 on 16 documents in a single executive decision extrajudicial to the law. He gave that facility to Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink and Airtel Limited.

In this incident, the assistant director of the ACC. Shah Alam Sheikh filed the case as plaintiff. Customs Commissioner Wahida Rahman Chowdhury retires as Commissioner of Large Taxpayer Unit of NBR. Currently he is in PRL.

According to the statement of the case, as VAT is legally applicable on the rent of the premises and premises of the 4 institutions, the institutions agreed to pay 189 crore 74 lakh 15 thousand taka on time through alternative dispute resolution. But as the companies did not pay it within the prescribed tax period, the amount of interest payable at the applicable rate according to the Musak Act is 152 crore 89 thousand 390 taka. According to Section 37(3) of Value Added Tax Act 1991, Commissioner Wahida Rahman Chowdhury ordered to calculate the interest very quickly. Out of the amount owed by the government as interest, Tk 5864 lakh 88 thousand 697 to Grameenphone Limited, Tk 5788 lakh 53 thousand 51 to Banglalink Digital Communication, Tk 14 crore 94 lakh 16 thousand 666 to Robi Aziata and Tk 20 crore 53 lakh to Airtel Bangladesh. 30 thousand 952 rupees. Subsequently, Wahida Rahman waived the interest in a different order after 3 to 5 months by abusing the power.


The report of the three-member investigation team headed by NBR member Hussain Ahmed also confirmed this. The case was filed against him under Section 218/409 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
