The Law and Life Foundation Trust has sent a legal notice to Jahangirnagar University authorities demanding Tk3 crore in compensation for the family of Afsana Karim Rachi, a first-year marketing student who died in a campus accident. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab issued the notice on Monday to the university's vice-chancellor and registrar via email.
The notice cites Article 32 of the Constitution and claims negligence by the university in ensuring campus safety. "University authorities bear the legal responsibility of providing a safe campus. The fact that disciplinary action was taken against security personnel and employees following the incident is evidence of negligence," the notice stated. It also referenced a similar incident from 2022 involving student Pooja Majumder.

The notice demands immediate reforms, including mandatory registration of all vehicles entering the university and a ban on unregistered external or battery-operated rickshaws. University authorities have been given five days to submit a progress report, with warnings of further legal action if demands are not met. The university has not yet responded to the legal notice.
